How to Take Screenshots on Different Devices [Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone]

For those of you who are not familiar with this handy tool, Screenshot or Screen Capture is basically a snapshot or an image of the display on your computer screen. Screenshots can prove to be very useful and convenient to store valuable data and share something you see on the screen, such as an open window, image, or text article. Almost all the major platforms support this incredibly useful tool. Here are some techniques of how to take screenshots on different devices.

How to Take Screenshots on Different Devices

1. Windows

Taking a screenshot on Windows is super easy. For a full screen screenshot, all you have to do is press the Print Screen button, located at the top right corner of your keyboard.

However, if you want to take the screenshot of a single window, you will have to press Alt along with Print Screen key. The screenshot will be copied to an invisible clipboard which you can paste into Paint to save it. You can also use the snipping tool, the dedicated screenshot tool, to capture screenshots.

2. Mac OS X

When taking screenshots of the entire image on your Macintosh, press Command+Shift+3. You will hear a shutter sound and a file will appear on your desktop containing an image of your entire display.

If you’d rather capture a part of your display, then, press Command + Shift + 4. The pointer will turn into a small targeting cursor, and you can drag a box that will become the image, that is saved to a file on your desktop. In Macs, Grab is the dedicated screenshot app for capturing screenshots.

3. iPhone/iPad

To take a screenshot on iPhone or iPad, simply press the power button (on the top-right of your device) and the home button (located at the bottom-centre) at the same time. A shuttering sound will produce in this device too, and the screen will flash white for brief time. The image will be automatically saved on the Photos application, under Camera Roll. You can also use the same method to capture screenshots for other apple devices such as iPod touch etc.

4. Android

Mobile markets are overwhelmed with myriad types and versions of android phones. There are different methods to take screenshots for different android devices.

For android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or above, screen shots is as easy and quick to take as in the iPhone. Just simply hold the volume button, and at the same time, press the power/sleep button. A flash will appear, confirming that the screenshot has been taken. You can find your new screenshot on Gallery application. The same method applies for Window phones 8 as well.

For Android 2.3 and earlier versions, you can take screenshots by rooting your Android phone and installing root-required screenshot apps or by using Google’s Android SDK. However, it is quite difficult and a little risky to snap screenshots through these methods.
